For the past couple of years we have been hosting a very successful series of summer evening concerts. Originally the aim was to provide our local community with summer evening entertainment at no cost and at the same time give budding musicians the opportunity to perform in front of an audience.
Our concerts are all free to attend and generally start at around 7pm ending at around 9pm. We try to provide some sort of refreshment after the event which is usually tea/coffee or perhaps Pimms on the warmer evenings. There is usually a retiring collection plate at the back of the church where guests can make a voluntary contribution to the church, but this really is entirely voluntary.
However please note that we are now getting requests for what we call 'external' concerts. These concerts are organised by the performer themselves or by a charitable group. There may be an entrance charge for these external concerts and they'll be listed as external concerts on our forecast of events.
It's become very evident that good news speads fast, because we have been receiving enquiries from musicians who have heard about the success of these events and would like to arrange a concert to demonstrate their own musical talent. Part of the sucess is no doubt due to the wonderful acoustics within St Augustine's but the atmosphere enjoyed by both guests and performers is mentioned often.
We can seat around 250 people and are easy to get to, so if you are a soloist, quartet, orchestra or choir (I'm not sure we're ready for a rock concert just yet, but you never know) and would like a venue in which to demonstrate your talents, OR if you're a professional musician and would like to hold a concert where you charge an entrance fee and would like to try a new venue, please feel free to contact the Vicar or Curate to discuss the possibility of using St Augustine's.
We are located in the middle of Thorpe Bay, about two miles east of Southend on Sea and just a short walk from the sea front. We are easily accessible by train (Thorpe Bay station is on the main line from London Fenchurch Street) and bus (Nos 1, 7 and 9), and there is ample on-street parking around the church. The church itself is on an island site at the junction of Johnstone Road and St Augustine’s Avenue.
Our address is:
