Southend Deanery Newsletter/Area Dean's report May/June 2016

It seems sensible to combine the material for my report to the deanery synod with material for more general circulation to members.

Matters for report:

University Chaplaincy

The area dean has proposed to the University a possible way forward for funding a chaplain.  He awaits their response.

Hospital Chaplaincy

David Childs has been licensed as chaplain to Southend Hospital.

The Airport area - Colin Baldwin is now priest in charge of St Stephen's Prittlewell, St Peter's Prittlewell and St Cedd's/Bridgewater Drive church, and David Pierce licensed as curate.  Conversations are taking place across the deanery boundaries with neighbouring parishes about furthering collaboration.

St Michaels and St Andrew's Westcliff - Tom Loh will be priest in charge of both parishes, and an associate minister is being appointed.  Conversations are also taking place with St Luke's.

St Mary's North Shoebury - Frank Smith is operating as a non-stipendary associate priest with day to day responsibility for a period of one year to begin the process of renewal.

Chelmsford Cathedral is keen to encourage deanery visits on Sunday afternoons, focusing around evensong and a tour of the cathedral, starting at 3:15 and ending around 5:30.  I should be interested to know if there is interest in pursuing this.  The Dean and the Canon Theologian are both happy to preach around the diocese each second Sunday.  Be in contact with them directly if this is of interest.
